But it was tough sledding, building an advanced media data business five years ago. Now a super-hot sector, Andre was ahead of his time.

While he made early progress with product development and industry partnerships, funded from a few early stage angel investors, access to venture capital was nearly impossible. While he says the adtech industry was open to him, he was shut out by VC’s — unable to even to get preliminary pitch meetings. He blames racial bias.

With VC’s investing less than 1 % in Black-founded start-ups, Andre is committed to changing the equation both by his example, advocacy and now personal investing in promising companies.

Lately, we have seen some financial energy go back in to ambitious, content-related companies. But that doesn’t change the challenging outlook, says one leading investor.

“Content as original programming remains a very hard category to invest in,” says Saul Klein of Index Ventures, the European VC firm whose portfolio has included Adconion, ChartBeat, OpenX and Songkick. That’s why Klein says content businesses supported by consumer transactions are still more investable than most ad-supported businesses.

“It’s very hard to build an ad-supported business unless you have over 50 million monthly uniques,” Klein says.

Desmond says that AOL is relaunching CrunchBase, the online resource for companies and individuals, with data via agreements with some 600 venture capital companies. He said the site is getting two million monthly views.
