CANNES — The organizer of the increasingly large Cannes Lions<\/a> festival, which got underway this weekend, has moved to allay rumors it may vacate\u00a0its eponymous host\u00a0by relocating to a rival city, by signing a decade-long deal\u00a0with local politicians.<\/p>\n

The Lions’ 15,000<\/a> attendance swells the Cote D’Azur town’s\u00a073,600<\/a> population every year, and is only getting larger, as the\u00a0festival draws in professionals from segments outside its traditional creative agency delegate profile.<\/p>\n

“Every year, there\u2019s a huge amount of rumor,” Cannes Lions CEO Philip Thomas<\/a> revealed to Beet.TV in this video interview. “It starts with the taxi drivers in Cannes saying, \u2018You\u2019re going to leave, aren\u2019t you, to go to Barcelona or whatever?\u2019<\/p>\n

“But a few days ago I actually signed a deal with the mayor of Cannes to agree to stay for another 10 years.”<\/p>\n

A rumored move to Barcelona would have seen Cannes Lions follow GSM World Congress, the original mobile industry conference, which spent several years in Cannes before reconstituting in\u00a0Barcelona as Mobile World Congress, as the mobile industry took off.<\/p>\n

But Lions isn’t there yet, Thomas said:\u00a0“Although people say, \u2018Aren\u2019t you getting too big for Cannes?\u2019, the fact is the film festival has more than twice as many people as we have.\u00a0The region can actually deal with a lot of people.\u00a0There are bigger shows than\u00a0Cannes Lions.”<\/p>\n

This year, advertising technology is set to play a bigger part than ever in Cannes Lions. But Thomas says “inspiration” is the watchword for an event he wants to remain about creativity.<\/p>\n
